For me, I think it’s time I part ways with this author. The pages flip quickly and it's ok if you don’t mind a protagonist who is dumb as a box of rocks (a pattern with the author), some implausibility, and a few eye-rolling moments. Fans of domestic thrillers might want to toss it in the beach bag this summer. This isn’t a terrible read, but it’s not terrific either. The pace does pick up near the end with a few surprises I didn’t see coming, but it was too little, too late. Alice misses obvious clues, and there is a lot of repetitiveness. Strange things begin happening in her home and she becomes increasingly suspicious of her neighbors. The more she learns, the more convinced she is that things don’t add up. Alice finds out the previous owner’s name was Nina, the same name as her dead sister, and becomes obsessed with her. Alice soon finds out why it was such a steal: a violent crime occurred there, a fact her partner kept from her. Alice and Leo move into a beautiful home in The Circle, an exclusive neighborhood.

The poem is named for a village in Cambridgeshire, England, which was the site of a 17th century Anglican commune that based its daily life around the Book of Common Prayer. Its underlying theme is one of purgatorial Fire. The final poem, “Little Gidding,” (39:08) was published in 1942. The third poem, “The Dry Salvages,” (beginning at 24:17) is associated with Water and is named for a treacherous cluster of rocks off Cape Ann that was among the hazards Andrew Eliot’s ship needed to avoid in order to safely reach the coast of Massachusetts. “East Coker” (which begins above at 10:46) is associated with Earth, and takes its name from the village in Somerset, England, from which the poet’s ancestor, Andrew Eliot, set out for America in 1669. It is named for an English manor house Eliot visited in the 1930s. The first poem, “Burnt Norton,” is associated with the element of air. “In The Waste Land the waste was place, the ‘Unreal City,'” writes Eliot’s biographer, Lyndall Gordon “here, the waste is time–time unredeemed by a sense of the timeless.”Īs in The Waste Land, Eliot uses the four classical elements as a structural device in the Four Quartets. Each one is a meditation on time, mixing Christian and Hindu imagery with personal and historical events. The Four Quartets are perhaps the most mystical and religious of Eliot’s poems. the moon (luna) is so called from the verb to shine (lucere). people regard Diana and the moon as one and the same. The ancient Latin writers Varro and Cicero considered the etymology of Dīāna as allied to that of dies and connected to the shine of the Moon, noting that one of her titles is Diana Lucifera ("light-bearer"). Cognates appear in Myceanean Greek di-wi-ja, in Ancient Greek dîos (δῖος 'belonging to heaven, godlike'), and in Sanskrit divyá ('heavenly' or 'celestial'). It stems from Proto-Indo-European *diwyós ('divine, heavenly'), formed with the stem *dyew- ('daylight sky') attached the thematic suffix - yós. The name Dīāna probably derives from Latin dīus ('godly'), ultimately from Proto-Italic *dīwī, meaning 'divine, heavenly'. In the ancient, medieval, and modern periods, Diana has been considered a triple deity, merged with a goddess of the moon ( Luna/ Selene) and the underworld (usually Hecate). ĭiana is revered in modern neopagan religions including Roman neopaganism, Stregheria, and Wicca. Historically, Diana made up a triad with two other Roman deities: Egeria the water nymph, her servant and assistant midwife and Virbius, the woodland god. Diana by Renato Torres ( Portalegre), is one of the best and most representative tapestries of the European and Portuguese tapestries of the 20th century.ĭiana is considered a virgin goddess and protector of childbirth. His wonderful books, notably The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England, 1400-1580 (1992), successfully challenged simple accounts of the English Reformation as a liberation, personal and national, from superstition and the obfuscations of corrupt and worldly priests stressing instead enduring commitment to the worship and rituals of the Catholic church. To some of us…it looks rather as if it had those feet shot out from under it.”ĭuffy is among those rare historians whose research has completely reoriented their field. Dickens thought that “late medieval Christianity was ailing and played out, and that as a result it had died on its feet. In one of the essays collected here, Eamon Duffy writes that the Reformation historian A. G.
